Airborne Research Experiences for Educators and Students

[Educators Grades 5-12 & Students Higher Education]
[Available Nationally]

The NASA Dryden Flight Research Center in California is home to Airborne Research Experiences for Educators and Students, or AREES, an exciting professional development opportunity for educators. The dynamic two-week training project provides research-based experiences for educators using NASA's unique flight resources. Participants practice science by becoming involved in NASA's earth science and flight missions. The depth of the experience is dependent on the activity duration and flight mission. The opportunity may include airborne and ground data collection, reduction, and analysis. When possible, educators are introduced to airborne data collection methods via direct observation of instrument investigators operating instruments on board NASA aircraft.

These experiences are translated into classroom practice by using thematic curriculum modules based on aircraft, instrumentation and research in which students become thoroughly engaged. Students conduct their own science investigations and explore the engineering design process based on the foundation that AREES provides and in context with on-going research.

AREES is open to primary and secondary educators (grades 5-12) who specialize in science, technology, engineering or mathematics. AREES is a project of the NASA Teaching From Space project and NASA's Dryden Flight Research Center, and is implemented by the Aerospace, Education, Research and Operations Institute in Palmdale, Calif.
