 The 302nd Airlift Wing is the largest tenant organization at Peterson Air Force Base in southern Colorado. More than 1,300 reservists, 200 active duty and 250 full-time personnel are assigned to the wing, one of several C-130 units located throughout the nation. The unit has the unique and special mission of aerial firefighting using the Modular Airborne Firefighting System. The wing mirrors its Active Duty counterparts by participating in exercises and inspections, while training daily for contingency operations.
Members of the 302nd AW serve proudly knowing their efforts are making a significant contribution to the Total Force. The mission of the wing is to train, equip and employ airlift forces in worldwide support of the nation's vital interests. The 302nd AW consists of three groups and one medical squadron. These include the 302nd Operations Group, 302nd Maintenance Group and 302nd Mission Support Group. The wing is also supported by the 302nd Aeromedical Staging Squadron, whose mission is to maintain the health and readiness of wing members.

The mission of the 302nd Mission Support Group is to provide leadership, management and oversight of wing support squadrons, flights and staff agencies for a wing that consists of 12 C-130H3 aircraft as well as more than 1,200 Traditional Reservists and 250 Air Reserve Technicians and Federal General Schedule employees. Lt. Col. Michael Smith is the acting commander of this group. |

The 302nd Maintenance Group consists of two squadrons -- The 302nd Maintenance Squadron and the 302nd Aircraft Maintenance Squadron, which manages the daily maintenance of 12 C-130H3 Hercules aircraft. The group also employs the 302nd Maintenance Operations Flight, which oversee the necessary repair and maintenance schedules executed by the 302nd MXG. Col. James C. Van Housen is the group commander. |

The 302nd Operations Group is comprised of three squadron -- the 731st Airlift Squadron, which operates 12 C-130H3 Hercules for its mission of tactical airlift and airdrop, aeromedical evacuation and the Modular Airborne Firefighting System mission; the 34th Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron, which is charged with transporting patients with life-threatening injuries in combat and non-combat zones; and the 302nd Operations Support Squadron, which overseas various operations-related activities, including intelligence, weather and tactics. In late 2009, the group joined with Active Duty 52nd Airlift Squadron, which joined the 302nd Airlift Wing as part of the Air Force's Total Force Initiative program. The 302nd Operations Group is commanded by Col. Kurt D. Jones. |
