Testing with AT

To test for this requirement, you must methodically follow the cues provided by the application and resist using your own navigation skills.

Using a screen reader or other AT that does not require a pointing device:

  1. Install the application using only the keyboard.
  2. Using only the keyboard, perform basic functions of the application such as opening and closing files, selecting and editing text, printing and finding items in the Help files.
  3. Determine whether there is a means of accessing documented controls and features from the keyboard. Test to be certain the methods work as documented.

Pass/Fail

Use these criteria to make your evaluation of the related checkpoints:

PASS

Pass if all these criteria are met:

  • Menus, drop-down lists, and unique toolbar functions can be accessed and used from the keyboard alone.
  • Selecting, copying and pasting can be done using only the keyboard.
  • Objects and windows can be moved, resized and manipulated using only the keyboard.
  • Information that is revealed by hovering over it with a mouse can also be revealed using only the keyboard.
  • It is possible to navigate to all panes in the application using only the keyboard.

FAIL

Fail if any one of the above conditions is not met.
