U.S. Citizen Services

U.S. Passport Services

The U.S. Embassy, Consulates or Consular Agencies in Brazil can accept passport applications of U.S. Citizens residing or traveling in Brazil. This service is provided at the Embassy, Consulate or Consular Agency in charge of your state of residence or travel according to its jurisdiction.

Note:

Applying for a U.S. passport while outside the United States is a different process from applying for a U.S. passport while inside the United States. Although the application forms, supporting documentation, fees and finished products are the same everywhere, each U.S. Embassy and Consulate or Consular Agency has different procedures for submitting and processing your final documents.

Application Forms

If you are applying from outside of the United States, DO NOT follow the submission instructions included within the application form, which are intended for people applying from within the United States. The same application forms are used whether you are inside or outside the U.S., though the process for submitting the form will be different.

Provide your travel plans and emergency contact: This information is not required, but may be helpful in processing your application and in assisting you in the future.

Forms must be printed on separate sheets of paper; do NOT print the form on front and back of the same sheet.

Complete the mailing address item with a Brazil address, either your home address or the address where you are staying.

All forms must be completed (but not signed) before your appointment.

Changes to Passport and Consular Report of Birth Abroad Delivery for Embassy Brasilia, Consulate General São Paulo and Consulate Recife

Effective April 30, 2012, U.S. passports and Consular Reports of Birth Abroad (CRBAs) approved at the Embassy in Brasilia and the Consulate General in São Paulo will only be returned via registered mail through the Brazilian postal system (Correios) following the procedure described below.  The Consulate General in Rio de Janeiro will continue to use a courier service, which can be arranged at the time of your appointment, for delivery of U.S. passports and CRBAs.  For details on arranging passport delivery from the Consulate in Recife, please click here.

To receive your passport or CRBA by mail from the Embassy in Brasilia or the Consulate General in São Paulo, you must bring an  envelope and sufficient Brazilian stamps with you to your appointment.  The registration label will be affixed to the envelope by the post office once the Embassy or Consulate returns it to them.  If you are applying for both a CRBA and a passport at the same time, both documents can be returned in the same envelope. Brazilian post office locations can be found here: http://www.correios.com.br/servicos/agencias/default.cfm

Brazilian postal fees for passport delivery by registered mail are based upon weight and service level.  The Brazilian post office typically considers one passport to be 70 grams and the current price for delivery of one passport by registered mail is 4,95 Reais.  More information on registered mail prices can be found here: http://www.correios.com.br/precosPrazos/precosPrazosNacionais/Carta.cfm

As of June 19, 2012, the fee to mail one passport or one passport and one Consular Report of Birth Abroad, is R$5.30.  If you choose not to have your passport delivered by mail, you or a representative who has been designated in writing may pick the passport up at the Embassy or Consulate during our American Citizen Services public office hours.
