Summary:

The Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) is a DoD agency charged with overseeing the educational systems for military dependents both domestically and overseas. DoDEA manages two separate but parallel systems: the Department of Defense Dependent Schools (DoDDS) overseas, and the Department of Defense Domestic Dependent Elementary and Secondary Schools (DDESS) domestically.

Eligibility:

DoDEA determines the enrollment and eligibility policy.  Dependents of Army Reserve retirees are not eligible to participate in DDESS schools, but may be eligible to participate in some DoDDS schools on a tuition paying, space available basis.

Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA): DoDEA is an agency of the U.S. Department of Defense that serves as an umbrella agency to monitor the Department of Defense Dependent Schools (DoDDS) overseas, and the Department of Defense Domestic Dependent Elementary Education and Secondary Schools (DDESS) in the United States.  DoDEA is headquartered in Arlington, VA, and its schools are divided into three areas that are each managed by an area director.  Within each area, the schools are organized into districts headed by superintendents.

Department of Defense Dependents Schools (DoDDS) overseas: DoDDS offers comprehensive educational programs for military Family members, grades K-12, in overseas locations.  DoDDS-Europe operates 82 overseas schools in eight countries in Europe, and DoDDS-Pacific operates 48 schools in the districts of Guam, Japan, Okinawa, and South Korea.  Dependents of Army retirees fall into the category of space available, tuition paying students at participating DoDDS schools.
