The United States remains deeply concerned about the rapidly deteriorating security and humanitarian situation in Cote d’Ivoire. Earlier today, I spoke with UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon, who is actively engaged in helping to resolve this crisis.

It is past time for former President Gbagbo to respect the will of the Ivorian people and end his claim to the presidency. He should step aside immediately and peacefully.

The United States condemns any and all abuses of human rights and demands that all parties halt attacks against innocent civilians and respect the fundamental human rights of the Ivorian people.

UN Security Council Resolution 1975, adopted unanimously, reaffirms that the UN Mission in Cote d’Ivoire (UNOCI) has the clear mandate to use all necessary means to protect civilians—including from the threat of heavy weapons. It is urgent that UNOCI fully and effectively implement this important resolution.
