Goal:
Deter human rights abuses and strengthen the administration of justice nationwide
Objectives:
- Training for federal and regional court and police officials in international and national human rights law and institutional administrative regulations
- Strengthen dialogue between relevant justice sector actors and stakeholders
- Assist with the design and implementation of justice sector reforms based on international best practice.
Description:
The project focuses on intensive human rights training for court and police officials with an emphasis on gender inclusion. The project facilitated the creation of and has provided continuing support for the ad hoc Joined Up Justice Forum. The forum brings together key actors in the justice sector (the Ministry of Justice, the Federal Supreme Court, the Federal Police, the House of People’s Representatives, and civil society stakeholders) for continuous consultations on improving the administration of justice in Ethiopia. The Government of Ethiopia (GoE) has taken a decision to institutionalize the forum under the auspices of the Federal Supreme Court.
Expected Results:
- Promoting further improvements in Ethiopia’s formal legal systems
- Expanding activities and stakeholder consultations by the Joined Up Justice Program
- Increase the awareness and understanding of key decision makers of the highest standards of judicial administration in democratic societies, including experience-sharing visits with a focus on priority areas identified by the GoE, such as community policing, prosecutorial thresholds, codes of conduct for law enforcement personnel.
