Goal:
Ensure that malaria patients in Ethiopia are prescribed with good quality, safe and efficacious malaria treatment
Objectives:
- Strengthen the capacity of the Food Medicine and Health Care Administration Control Authority (FMHACA ) and drug quality control laboratories
- Establishing drug quality monitoring and surveillance program within the FMHACA to ensure the quality and safety of medicines in Ethiopia
Description:
The Anti-malaria Drug Quality Control program assists in monitoring the quality of anti-malaria drugs found in the public and private sector in Ethiopia. It has implemented the Promoting Quality Medicines (PQM) program to achieve the programs objectives.
The PQM program selects, collects and tests anti-malarial drugs on a regular basis as part of its quality control program. During the first two years of President's Malaria Initiative support, PQM and local partners completed two full rounds of sampling and testing. The result of both rounds showed that a high amount of medicine collected were not registered with the Government of Ethiopia FMHACA and that locally manufactured medicines presented serious quality issues. The program continues to conduct this comprehensive sampling of anti-malaria drugs throughout Ethiopia to monitor the supply of quality medicines.
Expected Results:
- Establish a drug quality monitoring and surveillance program within the FMHACA to ensure the quality and safety of medicines in Ethiopia
- Train individuals from FMHACA in drug quality monitoring and surveillance
- Assist FMHACA to take enforcement action based on results obtained from the post marketing surveillance
