New Orleans Man Pleads Guilty to Firearm Conspiracy
NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA — ELTON JOHNSON, age 28, a resident of New Orleans, Louisiana, pleaded guilty today before U. S. District Court Judge Lance M. Africk to a one count indictment for conspiracy to make false statements in connection with a firearm purchase, announced United States Attorney Dana J. Boente.
According to court documents, on or about January 26, 2008, JOHNSON conspired with his girlfriend at the time, Glenda Wright to purchase a firearm from the gun show in Kenner, Louisiana, on his behalf. JOHNSON supplied Wright with the money in advance for the purchase. Prior to the purchase, it was understood between JOHNSON and Wright that JOHNSON was to be the true owner of the said firearm. After buying the Ruger firearm, Wright transferred possession and ownership of the firearm to JOHNSON as per their agreement. JOHNSON maintained possession and ownership of the Ruger firearm until February 4, 2008, when it was seized by the New Orleans Police Department after an arrest.
Sentencing has been set for April 12, 2013. At that time, JOHNSON faces a maximum of five years of incarceration, a maximum fine of $250,000, and up to three (3) years of supervised release.
This investigation was conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives and the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office. This case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Edward J. Rivera.
