Brigadier General Andrew P. Poppas of Janesville, Wisconsin, graduated from the United States Military Academy with a Bachelor of Science Degree and was commissioned as an infantry officer in 1988. He holds a Master of Science Degree from Kansas State University, is a graduate of the Defense Language Institute, and was a 2011 National Security Fellow at Harvard University.

BG Poppas’ command assignments include command of an infantry company in the 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division and the 82nd Advance Airborne School, command of 3rd Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division which became 5th Squadron, 73rd Cavalry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division and 1st Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault). BG Poppas commanded 5th Squadron, 73rd Cavalry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division in Iraq from August 2006 to November 2007 and 1st Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) in Afghanistan from May 2010 to May 2011 in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

BG Poppas’ key staff assignments include Battalion S-3 for 2nd Battalion, 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment, Brigade S-3 for 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment, Division G-3 for TF All American, and Operations Officer for the Special Operations Division and Anti-Terrorism/Homeland Defense Directorate of the Joint Staff at the Pentagon.

BG Poppas' military awards include the Legion of Merit, Purple Heart, Bronze Star Medal with Valor, Bronze Star Medal, Defense Meritorious Service Medal (2 OLC), NATO Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal with Valor, Army Commendation Medalk (5 OLC), Army Achievement Medal (1 OLC), Presidential Unit Citation, Joint Meritorious Unit Award, Meritorious Unit Citation, Afghan Campaign Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Joint Chief of Staff Identification Badge, Combat Infantryman Badge, Expert Infantryman Badge, Master Parachutist Badge, Air Assault Badge, and Ranger Tab.
