Our engineers test proposed E&IT (Electronic & Information Technology) products for Section 508 conformance within VA's Enterprise Architecture Framework. Our specialized staff tests OMB Exhibit 300's project/programs, E-Gov initiatives programs, IT Tracker products, Web based and Software applications. We host accessible E&IT demonstrations for VA stakeholders (veterans & disabled employees). We research and provide telecommunication access (VA's Tenacity phone system) and solutions for disabled employees.
The Section 508 team participates in industry forums as well as state and local Government meetings to raise awareness of accessibility issues and programs. We consult with Federal Program/Project Managers in implementing Section 508 and E-Gov initiatives and we serve as the key liaison for VA's Chief Information Officer and makes Department wide policy recommendations regarding Section 508 issues. Our team Develops VA Section 508 policies and procedures (6221 Accessible Electronic and Information Technology, Directive/Handbook).
The Section 508 office operates a lab facility that tests and validates E&IT (Electronic & Information Technology) products and solutions for compliance with Section 508 standards and policies. The office reviews Business Cases (Exhibit 300’s and 53’s) to ensure Section 508 compliance and we chair VA’s Section 508 Advisory Board to govern the planning, execution and deployment of enterprise-wide strategies. Lastly, we provide outreach services to support the Secretary's goals in the employment and advancement of people with disabilities.
The Section 508 Program Office is located on the C-Level in the Department of Veterans Affairs Central Office. Office visits are available by appointment to all employees interested in seeing, learning, using and witnessing the evaluation of E&IT products.
