What is a Nurse-Midwife?

A certified nurse-midwife (CNM) is an individual educated in the two disciplines of nursing and midwifery. Nurse-midwives provide independent management of women’s health care, focusing particularly on common primary care issues, family planning and gynecologic needs of women, pregnancy, childbirth, the postpartum period and the care of the newborn.

Certified Nurse-Midwives must have completed a university affiliated nurse-midwifery program accredited by the American College of Nurse-Midwives and passed the national certification exam to practice.

They are legal and licensed in all fifty states and practice mostly in hospitals and birth centers. CNMs practicing within a health care system must have an agreement with a physician  for consultation, collaboration, management or referrals as indicated by the health status of the client.

CNMs practice in accordance with the Standards for the Practice of Midwifery, as defined by the American College of Nurse-Midwives (ACNM).
