The Iowa City VA Health Care System (ICVAHCS) is seeking two (2) full-time Program Support Assistants (Schedulers) to work in the Business Office service line. The ICVAHCS is one of the facilities in the VA Midwest Health Care Network (VISN 23).

The primary duty of the incumbent is to perform the duties associated with scheduling and authorizing Non-VA Care for Veterans as requested by their VA provider. The incumbent reviews the administrative eligibility of patients when consults for non-VA care are received. The incumbent is responsible for assisting Veterans with finding a facility for the requested service and scheduling an appointment. She/he ensures that the authorization and any required medical notes/documentation are sent to the non-VA facility. The incumbent will also track the status of consults, appointments, and notes. She/he follows up on consults to ensure they are completed, closed, or cancelled in a timely manner. The incumbent will have frequent contact with Veterans, non-VA facilities, and VA providers/staff as necessary. Incumbent works with a high degree of independence while completing day-to-day duties. The incumbent will use various computer programs including, MS Word, MS Excel, MS Access, FBCS, and VISTA for generating correspondence, tracking consults, and entering authorizations.

WORK SCHEDULE: Monday - Friday, 8:00 am through 4:30 pm.

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirement by the closing date of this announcement.

Time-in-Grade Restriction - Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements. The grade may have been in any occupation but must have been held in the Federal service.  

Required Qualifications:  

GS-5: Requires one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-4). Specialized experience is work, whether paid or volunteer, that has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to perform the duties of the position to be filled.  Duties at this level include but are not limited to: experience in providing administrative support to a health care program and performing work of a general office support nature that encompasses a variety of different duties and responsibilities (i.e., preparing correspondence, collection, compilation, research, and/or tracking of data and program information, and performing administrative duties). 

Substituting Education for Experience at the GS-05 Level: To meet the required specialized experience for the GS-5 level, applicant may substitute 4 years of education above high school.  You must submit a transcript to receive credit for this education.

Experience/Education Combination: Equivalent combination of experience and education are qualifying for entry level for which both education and experience are acceptable.

Physical Requirements: The work of this position is primarily sedentary. Physical demands do not exceed those of a typical office setting. There may be some walking, standing, twisting, turning, sitting, pushing, bending, repetitive keyboarding or carrying of light items. Please also see VA Directive and Handbook 5019.
