Presented Nov. 13 at the 37th annual NWSEO National Convention in Las Vegas, the proclamation reads:
"This prestigious award is presented to a United States National Weather Service leader who has earned national admiration from his colleagues. X. William Proenza has established a leading rapport with the most vital U.S. National Weather Service mission partners. He works tirelessly to protect and secure resources for the agency's critical life-saving mission and to support the nation's economic well-being. He continues to influence the National Weather Service's current and future policies."Prior to receiving the special recognition, Proenza provided a presentation on the Weather Ready Nation program, new decision support services and the future of the National Weather Service.
The National Weather Service Employees Organization represents approximately 4,000 employees of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. They include
- NWS forecasters, technicians and support personnel who provide the nation's official source for weather forecasts and warnings;
- the attorneys in NOAA's Office of General Counsel, who are responsible for enforcing laws that protect the nation's environment and natural resources;
- the civilian crews of the "Hurricane Hunter" aircraft based in Tampa, Fla.;
- the technicians who track and command the nation's weather satellites; and,
- the hurricane researchers and other scientists and support personnel at the Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory in Key Biscayne, Fla.
