Child Born in Djibouti or Northern Somalia to U.S. Citizen Parent(s)

The American Embassy in Djibouti strongly encourages all U.S. citizens who have children born in its Consular District—Republic of Djibouti and Northern Somalia—to register the birth as soon as possible after the birth of the child. Children born abroad to U.S. citizen parents may have a claim to U.S. citizenship.

In order to determine whether you can pass citizenship to your child, you are required to make an appointment with the Consular Officer, to file an application for a Consular Report of Birth Abroad (CRBA), which is an official record confirming that the child acquired U.S. citizenship at birth. You and your child must appear in person. It is not possible to obtain a CRBA for a child over the age of 18.

Note:
- Payment for CRBA processing must be made in cash.  Both U.S. Dollars (printed in or after 2003) or Djiboutian Francs are accepted.
- We do not have mail-in/mail-out services. All applicants must appear in person to apply for and later receive the CRBAs for their children.

1. DO read, before contacting the Consular section, the Bureau of Consular Affairs' Department of State guidance.
2. DO contact the Consular Section by either calling us at (+253) 21-453-000 or emailing us at ConsularDjibouti@state.gov. In the email, please be sure to include the applicant’s name and parent's contact information, and be prepared to tell what documentation you have on hand based on information you have read online (see link in previous bullet). Once the information has been reviewed by the Consular staff, you will be told whether you can schedule an appointment.
3. DO schedule an appointment online, if advised by the Consular staff to do so.
