Jefferson Lab is located in Newport News on the southeastern coast of Virginia in an area known as Hampton Roads.
Situated between Norfolk and Williamsburg, Newport News is easily accessible by air, automobile and train.
Jefferson Lab is one of 17 national laboratories funded by the U.S. Department of Energy. It is a user facility, meaning its unique research tools are available to scientists and college students from around the world.
Currently, more than 1,300 users are engaged in research at the lab. Jefferson Lab also has more than 800 employees and contractors, who share work space and research facilities with users on the lab’s 206-acre campus.
The lab is managed and operated by Jefferson Science Associates, LLC, a partnership between the Southeastern Universities Research Association (SURA) and Computer Sciences Corporation (CSC).
For the general public, Jefferson Lab holds an Open House every other year - opening many of its unique work and research areas to the public. The last Open House took place on May 19, 2012.
