Lieutenant Colonel John A. Malpass is the Commander of the 114th Range Operations Squadron, Patrick Air Force Base, Florida. He is responsible for 113 personnel and the execution of two federal missions: operating and maintaining the Transportable Command and Telemetry System, a one hundred sixty million dollar mobile telemetry and aerospace range safety system; and supporting Launch and Range operations for a fifteen million square mile aerospace range for DoD, NASA, commercial and ballistic launch programs.
Lieutenant Colonel Malpass began his military career by entering the Reserve Officer Training Corps in 1995, graduating from the University of North Carolina Greensboro with degrees in Finance and Mathematics. Upon being commissioned as a Second Lieutenant and completing Space and Missile training at Vandenberg AFB, California, Lieutenant Colonel Malpass was assigned as a Missile Combat Crew member and progressed to Chief of Wing Codes Operations at Minot AFB in Minot, North Dakota.
In 2002, Lieutenant Colonel Malpass was assigned to the Air Force Technical Application Center at Patrick AFB, Florida and served as Flight Commander and Mission Commander directing operations and deployments of the Cobra Judy shipborne radar system. During this assignment he supported Operation Iraqi Freedom with a deployment to the Persian Gulf region. In 2005, his next assignment was to the Joint Space Operations Center, Vandenberg AFB, California, where he was Special Technical Operations - Chief of Plans and concurrently served as the Assistant Chief of Special Technical Operations. In July 2007, Lieutenant Colonel Malpass transitioned from active duty to the Florida Air National Guard and the114th Range Operations Squadron, at Patrick AFB, Florida. He served as Chief of Training and then Operations Officer in quick succession before assuming command of the 114th Range Operations Squadron in 2012.
