US ARMY CORPS OF ENGINEERS                                                                            BUILDING STRONG®

                                                                               FACT SHEET

                                                                          (As of August 2012)

AUTHORIZATION: Section 202 of the Energy and Water Development Act of 1981 (PL 96-367).

TYPE OF PROJECT: Flood Risk Management

LOCATION: Knox County, Ky.

CONGRESSIONAL INTEREST:  Rogers (KY-05), McConnell (KY), Rand (KY)

NON-FEDERAL SPONSOR: Knox County, Ky.

BACKGROUND:

· Knox County has suffered repeatedly from damaging floods, especially from the April 1977 flood of record.  This study is an in-depth investigation of alternative measures to reduce flood damages to structures likely to be impacted by a recurrence of the April 1977 flood event along streams within Knox County, which have not previously been addressed through specific projects, such as Barbourville.

· This study was incomplete when the Section 202 program was no longer funded. The program is not expected to be funded again in the foreseeable future, so the plan is to package the hydrologic and hydraulic work that was done and send that to the sponsor for the study.

IMPORTANCE: If no action is taken, there will be significant future flood damages.
