Dr. Beth Middlemiss
Dr. Beth Middlemiss is serving on a temporary appointment as the Special Assistant and Senior Advisor for Education to the DoDEA Director.
In this capacity, Dr. Middlemiss is serving as the Interim Area Director for the Domestic Dependent Elementary and Secondary Schools (DDESS) and DoDDS-Cuba schools. As the Director for DoDEA schools in the United States and Cuba, Dr. Middlemiss will oversee the operations of 65 schools located on 16 military installations in the United States, Puerto Rico, and Cuba. Headquartered in Peachtree City, GA., DoDEA schools in the United States are structured into 5 districts, educate more than 26,000 students and employ more than 4,000 people.
Dr. Middlemiss retired from DoDEA in 2006, with more than 19 years' service. She has held a variety of leadership and administrative positions, to include serving as DoDEA's Principal Deputy Director. Dr. Middlemiss has also served as the Interim DDESS Deputy Director and Chief of Staff; Principal at Faith Middle School, Fort Benning, GA.; and Director of Professional Development and Public Relations, Fort Benning Schools.
Prior to joining DoDEA, Dr. Middlemiss was a principal, assistant principal, counselor and teacher in Coweta County Schools in Georgia. Dr. Middlemiss holds a Doctorate Degree in Education (Education Administration and Supervision) from Georgia State University; a Master's Degree in Guidance and Counseling from West Georgia College; an Education Specialist Degree in Administration Supervision from West Georgia College, and a Bachelor of Arts Degree in History from Montclair State University in Upper Montclair, NJ
Currently, Dr. Middlemiss volunteers with the Juvenile Courts in Cobb County, GA., as a member of a Judicial Citizen Review Panel that focuses on care and support for foster children in the county. She has also served on the Advisory Committee for the U.S. State Department's Office of Overseas Schools ; the Advisory Committee of the Columbus State University Administration and Supervision Program; and the Board of Directors, Chattahoochee Council for the Prevention of Child Abuse, Inc.
She has also received the Secretary of Defense Medal for Meritorious Civilian Service and American Overseas Schools Historical Society Flame Award.
Dr. Middlemiss lives in Marietta, GA, and is married to Robert Middlemiss. They have one daughter, Whitney Sutherland, son-in-law Neil Sutherland, and three grandchildren, Marylou, Ellie, and Will.
