Summary	Correspondence, diaries, writings, genealogical material, diagrams, maps, photographs, and other papers relating chiefly to Mordecai's military career. Subjects include Mordecai's trip to Europe to study weapons development and manufacture in 1840, the development and organization of pre-Civil War weapons systems, settlement of war claims in Mexico in 1853, his report on military tactics used in the Crimean War written as a member of the U.S. Military Commission to Europe in 1855-1857, and his work as an engineer with the Imperial Mexican Railway in 1865. Correspondents include Jefferson Davis, Miriam Simon Gratz, Rebecca Gratz, Mary C. Longstreet, Owen Wistar, Mordecai's wife Sara Anne Hays Mordecai, and other Mordecai family members.
