Ambassador Ricciardone at Fenerbahce Ulker-Boston Celtics Game
As a part of their NBA Europe Live 2012 tour, the Celtics faced one of the favorites the Turkish League as a preseason opener at the Ulker Sports Arena in Istanbul on Friday, Oct 5, 2012. Ricciardone attended the game along with Consul General Scott F. Kilner, Deputy Chairman of Ülker Board of Directors Ali Ülker, and NBA Turkey representatives. He also met with a small group of Turkish children and their coach from Pertevniyal Sports Club Basketball School.

Teaching Excellence and Achievement (TEA) 2012
Nineteen English language educators from across Turkey have just returned to Turkey from a six-week U.S. Department of State sponsored Teaching Excellence and Achievement (TEA) program at the University of North Dakota's Department of Teaching and Learning. As part of the TEA program, these teachers studied best-practices in teaching methodologies, lesson planning, and the use of instructional technology for the classroom; discussed teaching strategies with U.S. educators; visited a language camp in Minnesota; and toured schools in Fargo and Grand Forks, North Dakota. They also participated in a number of cultural visits, including trips to New York City and Washington, DC. Participants left the program eager to return to Turkey to implement their enhanced teaching skills and share their experiences.

"2 Continents 1 Race" Bospohorus Cross-continental Race
We are meeting for sports at a point where history, arts and cultures converge. Asia and Europe are merging Bosphorus through a race. On the morning of 15th of July, thousands of swimmers began the race from one of the famous stops of the Bosphorus in Kanlıca and started swimming towards Kuruçeşme in Europe throughout the race-course of 6.5km’s.

English Access Microscholarship Program
The purpose of the English Access Microscholarship Program in Turkey is to make the study of English more accessible to adolescents from an economically disadvantaged background and to thereby increase their chances for participation in higher education and the formal economy.

The U.S. Women's Deaf National Soccer Team are the World Champions!
The U.S. beat Russia 1-0 on Saturday to win the gold at the 2nd Deaf World Football Championship. Ambassador Ricciardone and his wife Dr. Ricciardone were at the match to cheer the team on. Now three-time gold medal winners, the women have been undefeated since they began competing internationally in 2005.

Ambassador Ricciardone Visited the Summer Basketball Camp in Bolu
The U.S. Ambassador Francis Ricciardone had a ball shooting hoops with students at a summer basketball camp in Bolu on July 17th. Hosted at Abant İzzet Baysal University, the camp is organized by the Turkish Basketball Federation and funded by the U.S. Embassy.

U.S. Consulate General Istanbul's swim team, led by Ambassador Francis J. Ricciardone and Consul General Scott F. Kilner joined the Bosphorous Swim to achieve their "Personal Best".

Creative Arts Workshops for Kids
Timothy Lomas met kids at art workshops in Ankara and Antalya. The firts workshop hosted by LOSEV in Ankara, July 5 to 7. Timothy Lomas Art Camp opened its doors to future artists of Antalya at the Antalya Greater Municipality Youth Camp between the dates of July 9-13, 2012 with the support of the US Embassy, Ankara.

2012 Summer ELT Institute in Izmir
Between July 11 and 19, the English Language Office of the U.S. Embassy is sponsoring the 2012 Summer English Language Teaching Institute at Yasar University in Izmir. Two renowned American English Language Specialists, Dr. Jodi Crandall, Professor Emerita of TESOL and Language, Literacy and Culture at the University of Maryland Baltimore County, and Dr. Liz England, Professor and Chair of TESOL at Shenandoah University, are facilitating the institute, which is focusing on academic writing and presentation skills for 50 graduate students of English language teaching from across Turkey. The program is also celebrating the 50th anniversary of the U.S. Department of State’s English language teaching journal, the English Teaching Forum.

Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary (DAS) for Science, Space and Health Jonathan Margolis visited Ankara to discuss science and technology cooperation and innovation ecosystems. During the visit, DAS Margolis and officials from the Ministry of Science, Industry, and Technology, TUBITAK, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Energy, and KOSGEB discussed priority areas for new collaboration projects under the U.S.-Turkey Science and Technology Cooperation Agreement.

Earth Day 2012 - Ambassador, Marie Ricciardone Plant Trees in Kazan
Ambassador Francis Ricciardone, his wife Dr. Marie Ricciardone, Turkish alumni who have participated in U.S. Embassy-sponsored exchange programs, U.S. Embassy staff and their families, and city officials planted trees to celebrate Earth Day in Ankara's Kazan district over the weekend. Ricciardone joined Kazan District Governor Veysel Beyru, Mayor Lokman Ertürk, and Forestry Director General Mustafa Kurtulmuşlu as well as Turkish and American children and other guests at the planting ceremony in Kazan.

Ambassador Ricciardone Hosts Reception in Honor of Safak Pavey
Ambassador Ricciardone hosted a reception on March 22, 2012 in honor of Safak Pavey who recently received State Department’s “2012 International Women of Courage Award.” Pavey, the first disabled female deputy to be elected to the Parliament, was honored with an award for championing the rights of the disabled in Turkey. Ambassador Ricciardone, speaking at the reception, said Pavey has been an inspiration for not only Turks or women but all around the world.

One of the great living drummers Dave Weckl played together with 'Buzuki Orhan' and Turkophony All Stars during Ankara Jazz Festival which is supported by the U.S. Embassy Ankara. The audience had great time listening to Weckl and the band who mixed Turkish rhythms with Western Beats.

Workshops at Middle East Technical University and Ankara University with Korhan Basaran
"Suspend" and "drop" said Korhan over and over. "Feel your body. You are an individual on the stage; explore yourself. It is all about your movement," he said to one of the dancers. At the frigid end of January in the Turkish capital of Ankara, Korhan returned to the town where he had studied to give workshops. Many of his techniques he had learned under American dance legend Merce Cunningham.
