Diyala
Diyala PRT is located near the capital city of Baqubah, which sits approximately 100 kilometers (60 miles) northeast of Baghdad. Diyala Province extends from the northeast of Baghdad to the Iranian border. A large portion of the province is drained by the Diyala River, a major tributary of the Tigris. Because of its proximity to two major sources of water, Diyala's main industry has historically been agriculture, with dates as the main crop. The northern reaches of the province are within the disputed internal boundaries area.
The Diyala PRT is headed by a senior State Department Foreign Service Officer and assisted by a U.S. military support element. The team also includes other State Department Foreign Service Officers and detailees from USAID, Department of Agriculture, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, along with a strong group of subject matter experts in areas including governance, economic development, and public diplomacy. The PRT focuses its efforts on bolstering national unity and reintegrating internally displaced persons (IDPs), the revitalization of the agricultural industry, economic development focused on job creation, improving the delivery of health services, as well as developing governmental capacity.
