Family Matters Blog

Elaine Wilson, editor and writer for American Forces Press Services, launched the "Family Matters" blog to provide resources and support to military families, as well as to encourage a dialogue on topics ranging from deployments and separations to the challenges of everyday life.

AFPS started as a weekly collection of articles distributed by mail to military newspaper editors worldwide, and has grown into a timely news service available on the World Wide Web. Press service stories are available for use inside and outside the military on the Defense Department's Web site, www.defense.gov/news, as well as through free  e-mail subscriptions, RSS feeds, Facebook and Twitter. Publishing more than 3,000 news and feature articles annually, AFPS covers developments affecting servicemembers and their families, reports from the scene when senior leaders travel, and uses selected articles from the services and military units to tell the Defense Department's story. Now, AFPS has launched its first blog, soon to be followed by more blogs on subjects of interest and concern to servicemembers and their families.

Year of the Air Force Family web site launched 

Airmen and their families can log on to http://www.af.mil/yoaff/index.asp  to learn about AF-wide initiatives, monthly themes and programs, as well as contact local installation Airman Family and Readiness Centers to find out about local events and activities.


Officials announce homeowners assistance program details

The Homeowners Assistance Program is designed to partially reimburse those whose service to the nation has required them to relocate and sell their primary residence at a loss. 'My Biz' offers training records updating for civilians

A new tab in "My Biz" allows Air Force civilian employees to update their completed training through the self-service module in the Defense Civilian Personnel Data System. This eliminates faxing, e-mailing or delivering completed training certificates to the local civilian personnel section or training office.

Installation CPS or training offices will automatically update training records for any mandatory training courses. To avoid erroneous or duplicate training entries, employees should wait 30 days after completion of training to allow the system to update.

Personnel officials launch new civilian employment Web site

Air Force Personnel Center officials have developed a new Air Force civilian employment Web site to educate potential applicants and the general public about available civilian jobs, the eligibility and application process, and finding job opportunities in various specialties and career fields.

The new site will help clarify the Air Force's current civilian hiring process and provide site visitors with detailed information about available career fields. The site also helps explain federal employment benefits and educates visitors on student job opportunities.

President signs bill authorizing changes to TSP for civilians 

President Obama recently signed into law the Thrift Savings Plan Enhancement Act of 2009 as part of the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act (Public Law 111-31). One of the provisions of the new law eliminates the waiting period of appropriated fund civilian employees covered under the Federal Employees Retirement System to receive Agency Automatic one percent and Agency Matching Contributions to their TSP accounts.

Web site features jobs for disabled veterans 

DisABLEDperson.Inc. hosts the nationally based online job board called Job Opportunities for Disabled American Veterans. The site is free for disabled veterans to post their resumes and employers to post their jobs. To post a resume, job seekers must first fill out an online registration. The resume will post on http://www.JOFDAV.com  for three months. Current job openings on the Web site include accounting, administration and clerical, business development, information technology, research, restaurant and food service, science, collections, public relations and security. Postings specify geographic location, job category, career level, salary level and job description. VA Suicide Prevention Lifeline 

The Department of Veterans Affairs is expanding their suicide prevention message by publicizing information on the VA Suicide Prevention Lifeline on public transportation across cities and in public service announcements. If people think they're in crisis, preferably before they hit the crisis point, they should reach out for help. Early intervention is the key to suicide prevention. The VA Suicide Prevention Lifeline, 800-273-TALK (8255), is staffed by trained mental health professionals prepared to deal with immediate crises 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
