Diarrheal diseases, exacerbated by only 42% of the population having access to safe drinking water and 31% to appropriate sanitation, represent more than 75% of outpatient cases in Ethiopia and contribute to malnutrition. USAID’s water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) activities are designed to improve access to safe drinking water and sanitation services, in addition to promoting hygiene education.

Projects include:

• Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH): Improve access to sustainable, safe and adequate water supplies and sanitation. Also promote health, hygiene, and policy/program implementation education on a community level.
• Water, Sanitation and Hygiene in Oromiya Region: Promote health, education, and gender equity within an at-risk population through sustainable increased access to safe drinking water and effective sanitation and hygiene practices.
• Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene Transformations for Enhanced Resilience (WATER): Improve access to clean and sustainable water sources for target communities in the Somali, Afar and Oromiya regions.
