Reid Statement on Komen's Decision to Restore Breast Cancer Screening Grants to Planned Parenthood

February 3, 2012

Washington, D.C.—Nevada Senator Harry Reid issued the following statement after the Susan G. Komen Foundation reversed its decision to cut off Planned Parenthood from funding for breast cancer screening and preventive services:

“I am pleased that women in Nevada and across the country will continue to have access to life-saving preventive care thanks to the Susan G. Komen Foundation’s decision allow Planned Parenthood to continue receiving its grants. More than 4,000 women in northern Nevada have already received affordable breast cancer exams through Planned Parenthood thanks to a grant from Komen, and as a result countless lives have been saved.

“Every year breast cancer kills nearly 40,000 mothers, daughters, wives and sisters in our country. Many of these deaths can be prevented with proper screenings and tests. I applaud Komen for keeping this very important service independent of politics, a decision that is in keeping with its mission of saving women’s lives.”
