On June 6, the Department of Health and Human Services launched HealthData.gov at HealthData Palooza 3. In September, we began working on Phase 2 of development for HealthData.gov. Patch 1.1 focuses almost entirely on one of our key users – internal data publishers here at HHS. We greatly appreciate the feedback from our beta users, especially the team at Administration for Children, Youth, and Families (ACF) and National Institute of Health (NIH).

Are you currently using health data to build applications or have an interest in using health data but need some expertise to help you better understand the data?  Join us for a Tweet chat on November 1, 2012 from 1 – 2 PM ET and get connected with the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) data experts to discuss data from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid. 
HealthData.gov is hosting its first chat on Twitter aimed at increasing data education by connecting data experts with data users.  The chat will focus on some of HHS’s most high value data sets including new CMS cost and quality data from 2007 - 2010 in the Health Indicators Warehouse, Medicare Compare data and Blue Button data.  The chat will first start with a Twitterview with Niall Brennan, Director of CMS’s Office of Information Products and Data Analytics and then be opened up for questions.  Read more »

Over the last three years the message of the Health Data Initiative has been consistent – liberate data and entrepreneurs and developers will take the data and enhance it through development and innovation.  We at the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) have seen an increase in application development using open health data since the inception of the Health Data Initiative, but we would be hard pressed to find an application that has to potential to reach a greater audience as the U.S. News & World Report’s new web application, Best Health Insurance Plans. For the past three years, through the Health Data Initiative, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has focused on the liberation of health data.  This effort has focused on making data from HHS holdings more easily available without affecting privacy or confidentiality of individuals.  The intention is that entrepreneurs, developers, researchers and policy makers will take the newly liberated data and create web or mobile applications, products and services to help improve health for consumers, communities and service providers. Since 2010, over 300 data sets have been uploaded to HealthData.gov and in addition to the many events and examples of health data being leveraged than ever before. Read more »
