Chuck Mielke with Los Alamos National Laboratory's (LANL) single-turn electromagnet. The white tube passing through the magnet's single copper loop contains the sample and the measurement probes. A 3-million-ampere current pulse creates a 240-tesla magnetic field at the loop's center, generating so much heat and magnetic force that the loop explodes. The tube and its contents survive intact.
