Total Waste Management
Why recycle?

The answer to this question may vary depending on your point of view.  However, some facts are indisputable.

  • Okinawa is a remote prefecture, so the shortage of landfills/treatment facilities are critical issues.
  • Recycling is an executive order.
  • Recycling promotoes the effective use of our limited resources.

In any case, the primary tenet is that "each person can contribute to save the environment for our children and grandchildren through recycling." The paper, plastic, cans, wood, and scrap metals separated and recycled by you, are sold to local vendors and recovered/reused as "resources." If these materials were discarded as trash, they would go directly to incinerators/landfills, which result in serious impacts to our environment. We sincerely appreciate your continuous cooperation in our recycling program.

Environmental Training

The MCB Butler Environmental Training Section has taken great strides in meeting the challenge of providing cost effective and appropriate environmental training for all U.S. and Japanese personnel enabling them to achieve full compliance with the environmental requirements.

Our in-house trainings classes in both Japanese and English are for hazardous waste management, and for Geographic Information Systems (GIS) usage. We also provide Natural and Cultural Resources Management training in English.

External courses are provided by the US Coast Guard, US EPA, US Forest Service and various US Universities. All courses are open to Active Duty, US and Japanese civilians, plus local Japanese government employees.
