Problem:

Children with Autism and Related Neurodevelopmental Disabilities (ARNDD) have limited access to quality care. They report higher rates of unmet needs than the general population, more family stress, and less effective primary care.

Goals and Objectives:

Goal 1: To recruit 115 of the most highly qualified long-term trainees in each year of the project; 40 at the postdoctoral level. Objective 1: Employ national outreach to recruit highly qualified trainees. Objective 2: Ensure the continued application of qualified minorities to the project. Objective 3: Ensure that 100% of trainees meet standards and qualifications defined by faculty, the Training Advisory and Curriculum Committee (TACC) and the appropriate school or department. Goal 2: To prepare trainees to be a leaders in the MCH field by providing a didactic interdisciplinary core curriculum and clinical experiences that incorporates MCHB competencies. Objective 1: Maintain a LEND faculty representing the 14 disciplines needed to meet the LEND clinical and training objectives. Objective 2: Provide clinical preparation that is based on an exemplary, comprehensive, collaborative, interdisciplinary service model that is family-centered and culturally and linguistically relevant. Objective 3: Provide a didactic interdisciplinary training program that complements the information encountered during clinical activities. Goal 3: The KKI LEND will disseminate information that connects trainees, consumers, family members, and other professionals to evidence-based practices and new knowledge in the fields of ARNDD. Objective 1: Host at least one nationally significant Continuing Education/Development activity per year, present at 30 professional conferences and, by year three of the grant cycle, utilize distance technology to implement a life-long education program for former trainees. Objective 2: Have faculty and trainees work together to provide 450 technical assistance and consultations in the community, in the region and nationally. Objective 3: Disseminate 150 information and training materials to health and related care professionals, parents, school personnel and policy makers and continue to provide information about ARNDD on the KKI and Resource Finder websites . Goal 4: Each year, the KKI LEND will collaborate with its MCHB partners to advance the goals of MCHB. Objective 1: Collaborate with at least other two other LEND projects in continuing education, clinical consultation, technical assistance and research projects and collaborate with the other local MCHB training programs in joint training activities. Objective 2: Collaborate with at least 10 other MD MCH and Title V partners in at least two of the MCHB categories of collaboration (service, training, continuing education, technical assistance, product development, or research).

Methodology:

We will recruit a culturally and linguistically diverse group of advanced degree trainees who are committed to a career in ARNDD. A highly qualified faculty will provide them a combination of didactic, clinical and experiential experiences that will enable them to develop 1) leadership skills, 2) clinical expertise, 3) the ability to enhance knowledge through research, 4) competence in their communicative skills, 5) organizational/administrative skills. All trainees will have mentored direct clinical interactions. Long-term, postdoctoral trainees will participate in research efforts. Distance learning, telehealth, web-based and computer-based approaches will be used to supplement learning, dissemination, technical assistance and consultative activities.

Coordination:

Activities will be coordinated with MD Center for Developmental Disability, Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore-based MCHB training programs (LEAH, SW, MCH), MD Title V program, other LENDs, MD Dept. of Education, and local school districts

Evaluation:

Evaluation data will be collected to answer strategic questions regarding program performance and to promote continuous evaluation and improvement. This will include data and information regarding both the trainees in the LEND Project, as well as the consumers served through the clinical programs; as well as longer term outcomes such as leadership roles taken by the trainees at 1,5, and 10 years after graduation.
