The primary function of the National Soil Survey Center (NSSC) is to provide technical leadership and expertise in support of efforts to expand the availability of soils information and the understanding of soils. The first responsibility of the NSSC is to lead in the update and maintenance of a soil-resource inventory that addresses national needs. The staff of the Center also interprets soils information, makes the information available in useful formats, provides technical assistance, and promotes the use of soils information.  The information is used for a wide range of community planning and resource development issues that affect farm and nonfarm uses and homeland security needs.
