Clinical Questions Addressed by the CER (1 of 2)

Clinical Questions Addressed by the CER (2 of 2)

When To Use Analytic Frameworks. Complex bodies of literature with multiple key questions: analytic frameworks help define key questions, and thus direct specific literature searches. Complex chain of logic between intermediate and clinical outcomes: analytic frameworks help users understand decisional context.

When To Use Analytic Frameworks

Components. Population of interest. Intervention. Linkages that demonstrate key questions. Intermediate outcomes. Ultimate health outcomes (including harms).

Components

Revising the Framework. The population, intervention, and outcomes should be clearly identified in the analytic framework. All key questions should be represented clearly on the framework. Contextual information about modifiers and mediators may be appropriate. Analytic frameworks are drafted with the purpose of clarifying complex questions and will need iterative revisions through the topic refinement process (see the module, “Topic Refinement”).

Revising the Framework

This figure shows a blank portion of an analytic framework with a box with rounded edges connected to another box with rounded edges, which is then connected to a sharp-edged box. These represent two intermediate outcomes leading to a final health outcome. An arrow leads down from the figure to an oval shape, representing a potential harm. The framework also has an arrow leading directly form the first box to the final health outcomes box, indicating that there may also be a direct relationship.

Key Research Questions

Using the Framework. Do not build the framework and forget it. Use the framework throughout the review process to: Revisit inclusion/exclusion criteria; Keep a handle on scope; Reconsider the appropriateness of key questions; Guide interviews with key informants. Let the framework help in structuring the report and results.

Using the Framework

Key Messages. Analytic frameworks help reviewers clarify specific key questions and direct literature searches of complex bodies of literature. Analytic frameworks help end-users understand the decisional context of key questions when there is a complex chain of logic. Analytic frameworks can help the iterative process of identifying specific researchable key questions in the context of complex clinical or policy issues.
When Analytic Frameworks Are Developed. Analytic frameworks are developed during the writing phase, at the end of the systematic review. A. True. B. False.

When Analytic Frameworks Are Developed

Population of Interest. One of the essential components of an analytic framework is the population of interest. A True. B. False.

Population of Interest

When To Use the Analytic Framework. When is the most productive time to use the analytic framework? A. During the writing phase to allow the team to view the framework with fresh eyes. B. As the team needs it throughout the project. C. Only during quality assessment to assess applicability of studies. D. During the preparation phase to develop the key questions to provide a starting point for the key informants.
