AR pursues projects in several key areas that are considered to be of greatest relevance and potential benefit to advanced coal and power systems. Many of AR's projects focus on "breakthrough" technologies or novel applications, striving to balance high risk against the prospect of high payoff in terms of measurable benefits to coal and power systems technologies - improved efficiencies, lower costs, new materials, and new processes.

AR manages a portfolio that includes pre-commercial projects that rely on NETL’s in-house facilities and depth of expertise, as well as collaborative external arrangements that draw upon diverse outside resources. The AR program has an extensive national reach, currently involving some 130 organizations from industry, academia, non-profit organizations, and other national laboratories across the United States.
