Washington, DC - The CFC-50 Commission held its inaugural meeting on Tuesday, September 13, 2011. The Commission will advise U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Director John Berry on strengthening the integrity, operation and effectiveness of the Combined Federal Campaign (CFC) to ensure its continued growth and success. The Director named two former members of Congress, the Honorable Tom Davis (R-VA) and the Honorable Beverly Byron (D-MD), as the bipartisan co-chairs of the Commission.
"Beverly Bryon and Tom Davis led distinguished careers in Congress, and they are people of the utmost integrity and foresight. I've had the privilege of knowing them both for many years, and I have every confidence that under their leadership, the CFC-50 Commission will light the way for the next half-century," said Director Berry. "Tom and Beverly know the needs of our communities, and the hearts of our federal workers, military servicemembers and postal workers. Their service on this Commission will help us strengthen the integrity and impact of the Combined Federal Campaign, and I am deeply grateful to both of them for stepping forward to co-chair this Commission."
Director Berry announced the genesis of a Commission during the CFC annual meeting held in New Orleans last February. "The CFC has been a source of food, of warmth, of light, of medicine, of schoolbooks - a source of life. For countless Americans and people in need around the world, it has been like bedrock - supporting them, even if they don't know it's there."
Director Berry talked about the need for a Commission "to help answer the big questions, to make CFC more agile, more adaptable, and more relevant to more federal workers and more charities." He also said he looked forward to a Commission "to help chart our course for the next 50 years, to make the best even better." The CFC will celebrate its 50th anniversary later this year.
The Commission will be responsible for:
- reviewing the present structure of the CFC and recommend changes;
- reviewing current processes and recommending changes;
- developing recommendations for innovative ways to improve the CFC; and
- developing recommendations for changes to the regulations and/or legislation to improve the CFC.
The Commission is made up of a broad and diverse group of 28 key stakeholders, including members of the U.S. House of Representatives, CFC donors, campaign volunteers, non-government administrators of the campaign, participating charities and accountability/watchdog groups.
