Primary Responsibilities/Activities:
As Chief of the Long Term Resource Monitoring Branch, Barry oversees the work of 10 Branch employees. Their work focuses mainly on monitoring and research on the Upper Mississippi River through the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Upper Mississippi River Restoration – Environmental Management Program (UMRR-EMP).  

Research Interests:
Science within the Long Term Resource Monitoring Branch is focused mainly on monitoring approaches for large rivers; interactions of plants, animals, and water quality with river habitats; landscape ecology of river floodplains; and the ecology of native mussels.   

Active Projects: 
Dr. Johnson’s acts as the Science Director for monitoring under the UMRR-EMP and as a member of the management team. He is also engaged in efforts to help develop monitoring programs on other rivers nationally and internationally.  He also serves on the Science Council for the Wisconsin Initiative on Climate Change Impacts.
