Trends on Tuesday: Anyone Checking In?

NASA Explorer Foursquare BadgeThere has been a ton of media buzz (and dollars invested) on services that let people “check-in.” Facebook Places, Foursquare and Gowalla are examples of services that let people check in to let their friends know where they are. Venues are increasingly offering discounts or coupons to people checking in.

According to comScore, in March 16.7 million U.S. mobile subscribers used location-based “check-in” services on their phones. Other facts about location services:

  • 7% of all mobile phone users check in
  • One in five smartphones check in
  • Three quarters of the total mobile check-ins are from smartphones
  • 18-34 year olds are most likely to check in

For government, if you are a destination–park, monument, office with foot traffic, checkpoint or spacecraft–think about how to engage visitors when they check in.
