IWR Participates in National Engineers Week Outreach Activity

ALEXANDRIA, VA—March 1, 2011. IWR staff member Kelly Barnes took part in an educational outreach activity for National Engineers Week 2011. This event introduced preschool children to basic engineering concepts through the American Society of Civil Engineers’ Curious George Bridge Build, combining engineering and the popular children’s cartoon character. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is proud to be a supporter of National Engineers Week 2011.

Engineers around the country celebrated National Engineers Week 2011 from February 20 – 26. National Engineers Week commemorated its 60th anniversary this year, having helped inspire three generations of children and teens to be engineers. As in years past, this high-profile celebration gives engineers from all disciplines an opportunity to showcase their love of engineering and highlight the vast contribution they make to the quality of life we all enjoy.

In an annual recognition of Engineers Week, first begun by President Harry Truman in 1951, President Obama recognized the 60th anniversary of Engineers Week with an official greeting. Congressman Daniel Lipinski (D-IL) sponsored a resolution honoring the nation’s engineers during National Engineers Week. Congressman Lipinski applauded National Engineers Week for inspiring a generation of students and pushed his fellow Members of Congress to make math and science education a national priority.
