MyCare: Dave L. in Hummelstown, PA
Featuring people like Dave, whose customers started saving money when the "donut hole" began to close in 2011, MyCare is an initiative to educate Americans about new programs, benefits and rights under the health care law.
David-Care: Closing the Donut Hole
DAVE: That’s why it’s called the Affordable Care Act. Because if the patients can’t afford the medications, they’re not gonna take them.
Rhoads Pharmacy has been a part of the community since 1945. I’ve been owner and operator of Rhoads Pharmacy for 38 years. Well we’re talking about Central Pennsylvania probably between Harrisburg and Hershey and surrounding area. We feel that we are a major part of the community. we kind of are an anchor for the Hummelstown area.
The “donut hole” occurred at about $2,500 dollars and it was quite an impact. A lot of people didn’t realize it. They said ‘I don’t know why this happened to me, I didn’t think I’d get that far.’
TERRY: When I came to pay the bill it was much higher and I said something to Dave and he said, ‘well your out/you’re into the donut hole.’
DAVE: When they were not in the "donut hole" their copay was like maybe $10 or $15. All of a sudden they hit the “donut hole” and it was $150 and that was quite a shock to them.
DAVE: What we were witnessing was the people that had a 30-day prescription were getting them in 35 days, 37 days because they were splitting pills, taking doses every other day, missing doses. That has a great effect on their health care.
In 2011 when the Affordable Care Act started to close the “donut hole” they paid 50% of brands. People that normally had paid $150 only paid $75.
CARL: I'm here to pick up a "scrip."
CARL: Closing the "donut hole" has made a big difference in my prescription costs. I save like $210 which is big to me, you know.
CASHIER: See you later, Thank you, Have a good day.
DAVE: When we explain to them that their co-pay is now only 50% of what it used to be--they really don’t understand why and we explain to them that it’s a benefit of the Affordable Health Care Act and it’s part of Health Care Reform.
The Health Care Law is about people like me—it’s Dave care.
