Hazardous Materials Information
Resource System (HMIRS)

The Hazardous Materials Information Resource System (HMIRS) is the central repository for information on the hazardous materials used by DoD.

HMIRS is an automated system containing Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) information and item-specific value added data such as transportation, logistics, disposal and OSHA compliant hazardous warning label information.

Hazardous Materials Information Resource System LOGON:

Material Safety Data Sheets are product hazard information sheets that must be available to an employee for each hazardous material to which that employee may be exposed in the workplace. The Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration specifies the MSDS requirements at 29 CFR 1910.1200(g). The Hazard Communication Standard is commonly known as “HAZCOM” or “Worker Right-to-Know.” DOD implements this Federal regulation via its DOD Instruction 6050.5.

The Under Secretary of Defense (Installations and Environment) designated DLA as the lead DOD component and administrator for HMIRS. DLA therefore sponsors HMIRS and performs both program and functional manager responsibilities. DLA Aviation is designated by DLA to be the agency’s focal point for obtaining, reviewing, entering, and providing information for HMIRS in accordance with DODI 6050.5.

The focal point will obtain MSDSs, hazard warning labels and other data from all DLA supply chains and purchasing activities for products meeting the definition of “hazardous material” in the latest revision of Federal Standard 313, Material Safety Data, Transportation Data, and Disposal Data for Hazardous Materials Furnished to Government Activities.

Agency contracting officials shall furnish MSDSs and other documents to the focal point by the following methods:
