U.S. Embassy Makes $ 50,000 Donation for Flood Relief

June 10, 2010

U.S. Ambassador Eleni Kounalakis announced a $ 50,000 donation to assist flood relief efforts in Hungary.  The official grant, funded by the U.S. Government’s Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance, will be made to the Hungarian Red Cross, which will use the funds for blankets, cots, food, water pumps and other items to assist those affected by the flooding.

The Ambassador complimented both the official efforts of the Hungarian Government, as well as those taken by private organizations like the Red Cross, to meet the needs of those suffering due to the flooding.

“Following Hurricane Katrina” Ambassador Kounalakis said “many countries offered us assistance and moral support.  We are very happy to do the same for our Hungarian friends.”  The Ambassador hoped to visit the affected region and see the relief efforts personally very soon.

The Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance is a part of the United States Agency for International development and provides more than $500 million in emergency funding to nations hit by natural disasters annually.

Officials of the Hungarian Red Cross have expressed their appreciation for this donation.
