What is a visa?

A visa is a travel document issued by a United States Embassy or Consulate.  It indicates that a consular officer has determined you are eligible to seek entry into the United States for a specific purpose.  It allows you to travel to a United States port-of-entry and request permission of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Customs and Border Protection (CBP) immigration officer to enter the United States.  Having a visa does not guarantee entry into the United States.

DHS/CBP immigration officers, guardians of the nation's borders, are responsible for the admission of travelers to the United States, for a specified status and period of time. DHS also has responsibility for immigration matters while you are present in the United States.

Types of visas

Nonimmigrant Visas are for people with a permanent residence outside the United States, but who wish to go to the United States on a temporary basis - for tourism, business, medical treatment, temporary work, exchange programs or study. Nonimmigrant visa applications for citizens of Tajikistan are processed by the Consular section at the United States Embassy in Dushanbe.

Immigrant Visas are required by anyone seeking to take up indefinite or permanent residence in the United States. Upon entry into the United States, an immigrant visa holder is processed for a Permanent Resident Card (I-551), commonly known as a Green Card.  Immigrant visa applications for citizens of Tajikistan are processed in the United States Embassy in Almaty, Kazakhstan.
