Purpose
Spatially-extensive oceanographic data collection, oceanographic
instrument package deployments, DGPS drifter deployments,
Information to be Derived
Current speed and direction, temperature, salinity, water depth,
acoustic backscatter, optical backscatter, grain size, Lagrangian current
trajectories.
Summary
The vessel-mounted acoustic Doppler current profiler (VM-ADCP) was used
to collect current speed, current direction and acoustic backscatter in
3-dimensions. The CTD/OBS concurrently collected 2-dimensional vertical
profiles of temperature, salinity, optical backscatter and density. The Niskin
bottles were used to collect water samples for acoustic and optical backscatter
calibrations. The LISST collected suspended sediment concentration and grain
size data for acoustic and optical backscatter calibrations. Nine
bottom-mounted instrument packages were deployed to make long-term measure
waves, currents, temperature, salinity, optical backscatter, acoustic
backscatter, bed level changes and take digital images of the sea floor. Ten
DGPS drifters were released in sets of 2-4 to track water masses' movements in
a Lagrangian framework.
