February 12/13: Black History Month Music Program

Black American Artists Association

This year, 2013 is the 100th birthday of Rosa Parks and the 50th anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.’s famous “I Have A Dream” speech.  Therefore, the United States Embassy in Berlin wants to celebrate this Black History Month with the special funding of two African-American music programs.  Four members of the Black American Artists Association’s Ebony Big Band will present and perform at Alfred Nobel Schule on February 12th and at OSZ TIEM on February 13th. 

The focus of the programs is the history of the musical influences of African Americans, including their styles such as slave songs, gospel, rhythm n’ blues, funk & soul, jazz, and modern hip-hop.  The lives of such greats as Duke Ellington, Cab Calloway, Louis Armstrong, Bessie Smith, Ma Rainey and Fats Waller will be showcased.

February 6: Opening of Exhibit “On Set with Scorsese”

In celebration his 70th birthday the Deutsche Film- und Fernsehakademie Berlin will launch an exhibit titled “On Set with Scorsese” by French-born photographer Brigitte Lacombe.

November 21-January 27: Tony Vaccaro, The Retrospective

Der Freundeskreis Willy-Brandt-Haus e.V.

The Friends of the Willy-Brandt-Haus will show an exhibit of works by the American photographer Tony Vaccaro at Willy-Brandt-Haus that will be opened on Nov. 21. The exhibit is taking place on the occasion of Tony Vaccaro’s 90th birthday and will show photos of 7 decades. He is one of the greatest photo journalists of the 20th century and is especially well-known for the photographies he took during and after World War II (of the Berlin Airlift among others). After the war, he became a popular fashion and lifestyle photographer and became famous also thru his portrait photos of Marlon Brando, Charles Chaplin, Maria Callas, Marlene Dietrich, Marcel Duchamp, Federico Fellini, Sophia Loren and others.

The exhibit will be on at Willy-Brandt-Haus from Nov. 22, 2012, until Jan. 27, 2013 (Tue.-Sun., 12:00-18:00). Free admission.

Jennifer duBois was born in Northampton, Massachusetts in 1983. She earned a B.A. in political science and philosophy from Tufts University and an M.F.A. in fiction from the Iowa Writers’ Workshop, where she was a Teaching-Writing Fellow. After completing a Stegner Fellowship in fiction, Jennifer served as the Nancy Packer Lecturer in Continuing Studies at Stanford University. Her writing has appeared or is forthcoming in Playboy, The Wall Street Journal, Esquire and Byliner’s “New Voices” collection, The Missouri Review, The Kenyon Review, The Florida Review, The Northwest Review, Narrative, ZYZZYVA, FiveChapters and elsewhere. Her short story “Wolf” was named a Notable Story in Best American Short Stories 2012, and the first chapter of A Partial History of Lost Causes was selected as a Top Five Story of 2011-2012 by Narrative. Jennifer was recently honored by the National Book Foundation’s 5 Under 35 program.

Meet Odette, Clarice, and Barbara Jean. . .

Earl's Diner is their home away from home, the first black-owned business in downtown Plainview, Indiana.  Dubbed "the Supremes" by their friends, the inseparable trio is watched over by Earl during their complicated high school days in the racially charged 1960s, and then every Sunday after church for the next forty years. Through marriage, child rearing, infidelity, and illness, Odette, Clarice, and Barbara Jean weather life's storms together, sharing the juiciest gossip, the biggest tears, and the most uproarious banter . . .  at the same time, at the same table, at Earl's All-You-Can-Eat!

Edward Kelsey Moore lives and writes in Chicago, where he also enjoys a career as a professional cellist. Edward’s short has appeared in Indiana Review, African American Review, and Inkwell, among other journals. His short story, "Grandma and the Elusive Fifth Crucifix" was selected as an audience favorite on National Public Radio's Stories on Stage series. E.K. Moore is a professional cellist who plays for the Chicago Sinfonietta.
