Biography |
The U.S. Air Force Academy Preparatory School is designed to academically, physically and militarily prepare qualified young men and women to enter the Academy. Cadet applicants who are not accepted into the Academy may receive an appointment to the Prep School. Successful completion of the Prep School improves graduates' chances for appointment as a cadet but does not guarantee admission to the Academy.
Every cadet candidate must accept the Honor Code when entering the Prep School. Cadet candidates also have the opportunity to participate in community service projects, honor and ethics symposiums and distinguished visitor testimonials as part of the continuous character development process.

The Prep School's academic year is divided into quarters, each approximately nine weeks long. In addition to math, science and English courses, the Prep School offers a course in basic study skills to help students make the transition to the demanding requirements of college academics. During Basic Military Training, students take tests to determine placement in regular or advanced courses.
During the spring quarters, exceptionally qualified students will be invited to take Air Force Academy classes instead of the Prep School courses. These advanced courses include Calculus 141, English 111, Chemistry 100, Chemistry 200 and Physics 110. Students may receive Academy credit for successfully completing these courses, though completion of placement tests is necessary to gain credit for calculus and physics classes. |

Along with academics, athletics, and military training, character is one of the Prep School's four pillars of development. You may have already heard about the four don'ts of the Honor Code: don't lie, don't cheat, don't steal, and don't tolerate those who do. The positive principles that encompass and go far beyond the four don'ts are:
Honesty in place of "don't lie"
Fairness in place of "don't cheat"
Respect in place of "don't steal"
Support in place of "don't tolerate those who do"
The Prep School wants students to focus on the positive ideals of the Honor Code. These ideals encompass the theme of doing the right thing and living honorably. Prep School students are under tremendous pressure to succeed and face many obstacles both here and at the Academy. The character development pillar is designed to help cadet candidates make the right choice for every challenge. |

Prospective cadet candidates must:
- Be at least 17 years old and not have passed their 22nd birthday by July 1st of the year they enter the Prep School
- Be eligible for U.S. citizenship
- Be unmarried and have no dependents
- Meet specific medical standards for a commission in the U.S. Air Force

Military training at the Prep School is focused on the Air Force Core Values: Integrity First, Service Before Self and Excellence In All We Do. Military training is a part of a cadet candidate's everyday life. Upon arrival at the Prep School, cadet candidates enter a 18-day indoctrination program called Basic Military Training.
BMT is designed to orient cadet candidates to the military lifestyle and teach them about the organization of the Air Force, military customs and courtesies, drill and ceremonies, military history, Core Values, the Honor Code and proper wear of the uniform. Cadet candidates receive detailed briefings on the standards of conduct and appearance they will be expected to maintain while at the Prep School. To ensure that they uphold these standards, candidates undergo regular inspections of their uniforms and personal appearance as well as their rooms and the overall dormitory. |

The four top-tier sports at the Academy -- football, men's and women's basketball and volleyball -- are also priority sports at the Prep School, where students spend 10 months undergoing athletic development. Academy coaches use the Prep School as a place to build future athletes by engaging them in a competitive arena militarily, academically and athletically to prepare them for NCAA-level competition. |
