Overview

IDESThe Integrated Disability Evaluation System (IDES), is a joint program between the Department of Defense (DoD) and the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) that allows the disability evaluation system of Army (and those of the other military services)to run concurrently with the VA’s.

It retains many of the same components of the legacy system, but eliminates the requirement for Soldiers to navigate the VA system by themselves after they are medically separated or retired. Also their VA benefits begin as soon as they become civilians. Europe and Asia were part of the final implementation phase and began the new system Oct 1.

Learn more about the background of the IDES program with the DoD IDES Pamphlet.

WHAT IS THE BOTTOM LINE FOR SOLDIERS AND FAMILIES IN EUROPE?

The new process in Europe is to PCS Soldiers, along with their Families, back to the United States.  It is necessary for the PCS to happen rapidly, but the process is designed to give Soldiers, their Families and their units enough time to do things in an orderly, coordinated way.  Why is this necessary?  The Veterans Administration is half of the integrated evaluation team.  The VA’s medical centers are located in the US and Puerto Rico but not in foreign countries.  This makes a return the US necessary.

Commander

MY ROLE

I am a Unit Commander or Staff, and Leader, and want to know how best to support my Soldier through this process.

Referral into the IDES triggers multiple overlapping and cascading actions.

All commanders must establish their own E-Profile at Medical Operations Data System (MODS). Contact your E-Profile installation administrator or the online MODS Help Desk for questions with your account.

Commanders must be prepared to support their Soldier's Permanent Change of Station (PCS) move on an accelerated timeline.

A Physical Evaluation Board Liaison Officer (PEBLO) from your local Military Treatment Facility (MTF) will contact you and your Soldier as well as a representative from the Warrior Transition Battalion - Europe (WTB-E).  They will schedule the required medical briefings, exams and administrative appointments, and will act as guides for you, your Soldier, the Soldier’s Family, and your unit.
