  • NASA News Release: Fermi Proves Supernova Remnants Produce Cosmic Rays (14 Feb 2013)
    A new study using Fermi observations reveals the first clear-cut evidence that the expanding debris of exploded stars produces some of the fastest-moving matter in the universe. This discovery is a major step toward understanding the origin of cosmic rays, one of the Fermi mission's primary goals.
  • NASA News Release: Chandra Suggests Rare Explosion Created Our Galaxy's Youngest Black Hole (13 Feb 2013)
    New data from the Chandra X-ray Observatory suggest a highly distorted supernova remnant, W49B, may contain the most recent black hole formed in the Milky Way. The remnant appears to be the product of a rare explosion in which matter is ejected at high speeds along the poles of a rotating star.

  • 2013 Fermi Summer School (12 Feb 2013)
    The Fermi project is happy to announce the opening of registration for the 2013 Fermi Summer School, which will run from May 28 through June 7 2013. In addition to comprehensive coverage of gamma-ray astrophysics topics, this year's program will include a special emphasis on searches for dark matter and new physics.
  • Fermi Alternative Observing Strategies (12 Feb 2013)
    The Fermi project and the Fermi Users Group are considering the possible implementation of alternative observing strategies that might more effectively facilitate specific science objectives, e.g., a desire for increased sensitivity to flaring sources in the northern hemisphere, or monitoring sources near the galactic center. These are only a few among many possibilities and community input is sought.

    This catalog of 5,263 optically variable sources monitored by the INTEGRAL OMC (from Alfonso-Garzon et al. 2012, A&A, 548, A79) is now available in Browse and Xamin.
  • AO-11 Proposal Schedule Released (28 Jan 2013)
    The ISOC is preparing the next call for proposals requesting INTEGRAL observing time. The AO-11 will be released on 4 March 2013, with a deadline of 12 April 2013. The subsequent call for proposals requesting data rights will be released September 2013. The AO-11 cycle of observations will begin on 1 January 2014 and has a duration of 12 months.
  • AO-10 Starts (28 Jan 2013)
    The AO-10 cycle of observations started on January 1st and will last 12 months. The INTEGRAL target lists and sky maps are available at the above link.

    The deadline for proposals to participate in the Fermi Cycle-6 Guest Investigator program is January 18, 2013 at 4:30 PM EST. Proposals should be submitted through the ARK Remote Proposal Submission (RPS) system. Further details are available in the Fermi Amendment to the 2012 ROSES NRA.

  • NASA News: Fermi and the VLBA Detect Gamma-Ray Flaring in a Galaxy 'Far' From Its Central Black Hole (07 Jan 2013)
    In 2011, a blast of energy launched by the 2.6 billion solar mass black hole in 4C +71.07 almost 11 billion years ago reached the Earth. Using a combination of data from Fermi and the Very Long Baseline Array, astronomers have zeroed in on the source of this ancient outburst as coming from a location about 20 pc from the black hole.

    This latest Chandra movie features a deeper look at a fast moving jet of particles produced by the Vela pulsar, a rapidly rotating neutron star, and may provide new insight into the nature of some of the densest matter in the universe.

  • Swift Press Release: A New Year's Gift from NASA & Penn State (02 Jan 2013)
    A large new collection of space photos taken at wavelengths that the human eye can not perceive and that do not penetrate Earth's atmosphere has been released as a New Year's gift by NASA and Penn State University. The images were captured by the UVOT telescope onboard Swift, whose science and flight operations are controlled by PSU from the Mission Operations Center in State College, Pa.

  • NASA Feature: New Study Reveals a Remarkable Symmetry in Black Hole Jets (14 Dec 2012)
    Black holes range from modest objects formed when individual stars end their lives to behemoths billions of times more massive that rule the centers of galaxies. Nemmen et al. (2012, Science, 338, 1445) use Swift and Fermi data to show that high-speed jets launched from active black holes possess fundamental similarities regardless of mass, age or environment, hinting that common physical processes amy be at work.

  • General Catalog of Variable Stars, March 2012 Version (12 Dec 2012)
    This catalog (from Samus et al. 2012) of 45,835 known variable stars is now available in Browse and in Xamin, as is an updated version of the related GCVS Suspected Variable Stars Catalog from the same source.
  • Astronomers Catch Jet from Binge-Eating Black Hole (12 December 2012)
    Back in January, a new X-ray source flared and rapidly brightened in the Andromeda galaxy (M31), located 2.5 million light-years away. Classified as an ultraluminous X-ray source (ULX), the object is only the second ever seen in M31 and became the target of an intense observing campaign by orbiting X-ray telescopes - including NASA's Swift - and radio observatories on the ground. These efforts resulted in the first detection of radio-emitting jets from a stellar-mass black hole outside our own galaxy.

    Grebenev et al. (2012, Nature, 490, 373) have just published their results from 4.5-Megasecond INTEGRAL observations of SNR 1987A in 2010-11 in which they have detected the predicted Ti-44 emission lines at 68 and 78 keV.

    The call for proposals to participate in the Fermi Cycle-6 Guest Investigator Program has been issued by NASA Headquarters as an amendment to the 2012 ROSES NRA. The Cycle-6 program includes several new opportunities for guest investigations.

  • X-ray Satellites Monitor the Clashing Winds of a Colossal Binary (12 October 2012)
    The hottest and most massive stars don't live long enough to disperse throughout the galaxy. Instead, they can be found near the clouds of gas and dust where they formed - and where they will explode as supernovae after a few million years. They huddle in tight clusters with other young stars or in looser groupings called OB associations, a name reflecting their impressive populations of rare O- and B-type stars.

  • NASA News Release: Simulations Uncover 'Flashy' Secrets of Merging Black Holes (02 Oct 2012)
    A team that includes astrophysicists at NASA/GSFC is using computational models to explore the mergers of supersized black holes. Their most recent work investigates what kind of electromagnetic "flash" might be seen by telescopes when astronomers ultimately detect gravitational wave signals from such an event.

    Gupta et al. (2012, ApJ, 756, L8) have used NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory to find evidence that our Milky Way Galaxy is embedded in an enormous halo of hot gas that extends for hundreds of thousands of light years. The estimated mass of the halo of over 10 billion solar masses is comparable to the mass of all the stars in the Galaxy.

    The Fermi observatory entered a sun-pointing attitude on Friday, October 21st at 06:02 UT and resumed normal data-taking at 10:43 UT the same day. The mode change was in response to an inconsistency in attitude solutions on board the spacecraft after the end of a scheduled nadir observation. The operations team has established that this was unlikely to be due to a hardware problem on the observatory and are investigating improvements to operations to prevent this in the future.

    INTEGRAL participated in the 2008 NASA Senior Review. In their report, the Senior Review Committee recognized the unique capabilities of INTEGRAL in the hard X-ray and soft gamma-ray regime as well as its important synergy with the upcoming GLAST mission. As a result, the committee recommended continuing NASA funding for INTEGRAL through FY10.
