Democracy and Governance

USAID seeks to further ensure that recent democratic gains in Ukraine are solidified. USAID works with the Ukrainian parliament to improve the legislative process and increase public accountability and helps local governments upgrade services, learn to better manage budgets and increase outreach to citizens. The Agency supports Ukraine’s commitment to the rule of law by increasing judicial transparency, accountability and access to justice through support for legal clinics, advocacy organizations and judicial reform initiatives.

Civil society is a major vehicle for sustaining democracy in Ukraine. Therefore, USAID helps to develop the capacity of nongovernmental organizations to make an impact on policy and decision-making processes. By providing training to independent media in Ukraine, USAID enhances journalistic professionalism, ethics and monitoring ability. Finally, USAID strengthens political parties’ ability to represent citizen interest and provides targeted support to ensure free and fair elections.
