Biomass Energy Development

A discussion of biomass energy, environmental impacts associated with biomass energy development, and mitigation measures to avoid or reduce biomass energy development impacts.

Follow the links below to learn about biomass energy, and environmental impacts of biomass energy development, including impacts from biomass production (production, preprocessing, and transportation) and the construction, operation, and decommissioning of biomass energy facilities. You'll also find information about mitigation measures that can be used to reduce environmental impacts.

Biomass Energy Development and Electric Transmission

Biomass energy projects that generate electricity require electric transmission systems to transport the electricity they generate to consumers. Biomass projects that generate liquid or gaseous fuels would transport the fuel by truck, rail, or pipeline. Environmental impacts from construction and operation of electric transmission systems and pipelines are discussed separately in the Energy Transmission section, and must be considered in addition to the impacts presented here.
