Commentary by Chief Master Sgt. Gilbert P. Manalo
181st Intelligence Wing

2/7/2013 - Hulman Field, Ind. --      As we begin a new year, I cannot help but reflect on the past and contemplate the future. When I first joined this unit as a senior airman coming out of active-duty Air Force in November 1987, I did not realize I was joining a Guard unit with such a rich and proud heritage.
Heritage, according to Webster Dictionary, is the traditions and achievements that are part of the history of a group. The 181st has a tradition (we sometimes refer to tradition as "In true Racer fashion") of dedication to the community, state and country. Whether it is a local mission, or contributing to contingency operations in various locations throughout the world, in true Racer fashion, we strive to get the job done and done right.
The achievements attained by the 181st are significant and far too many to mention here. However, the first significant achievement I can recollect as a member of this wing was actually the year I joined. That year, 181st was awarded their first Air Force Outstanding Unit Award. Since then, the 181st have received a total of 4 AFOUA. Not a lot of units can boast such accomplishments. An Air Force Outstanding Unit Award is a true reflection of the hard work and dedication of each and every member of the wing. As members of the 181st, this is an achievement we should be proud of and it signifies another instance to add to the legacy of the 181st.
It did not take long for me to realize the proud heritage and significant contributions the 181st has made throughout its distinguished history. I am humbled to know that I am part of a unit rich in heritage, and all of you should be as well. Each one of you contributes to our legacy whether you are a basic airman, a chief, or an officer. The heritage we have established and continue to build upon is the foundation for the future of the 181st. A future I believe to be a bright one, not only because of our history, but because of the outstanding members of this unit. Today, we stand as guardians of freedom and justice, our nation's sword and shield, its sentry and avenger. Whether engaged in active combat operations or supporting the war on terrorism, we should be proud of our actions as wingmen, leaders and warriors. We promise to never leave an airman behind, commit to never falter, and venture to never fail.
We have a lot to be proud of and I would like to pause and thank those who have made it, and continue to make it, all possible. And to the past members of this wing who have contributed to our legacy; for their service, their efforts, and for the sacrifices they have made. To the past and present members of the 181st who have made it possible for us to be what we are today---a unit with a strong heritage and a bright future.
