Garrison Commander, Soldiers, Marines Support the 2011 Run to Home Base 9K

Run for Home Base
Numerous Service Members from Supported Organizations on post participated in the 2011 Run to Home Base 9K Run (5.6 miles) held in Boston on Sunday, 22 May.

On a cool, overcast morning at Fenway Park, these Service Men and Women joined more than 2,000 runners, including almost 300 active duty Service Members, to raise money to support Veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan with combat stress or brain injuries.

The Run to Home Base presented by New Balance is a unique 9K fundraising run through scenic Boston ending with an unforgettable experience of crossing “home base” (plate) at historic Fenway Park. Friends and family were able to watch their runners from the stands at Fenway, with food, entertainment and fun family activities in the concourses of America’s Most Beloved Ballpark.

Participants in the 2011 Run to Home Base presented by New Balance who finished the race within the time allotted for the event experienced two finish lines. First, the official race time was recorded as you crossed the clearly marked finish line right in front of Fenway's famed Green Monster. Then, participants experienced the thrill of crossing home plate at Fenway Park as the "photo finish" of the Run. Official race photographers were on hand to try to snap a complimentary photo of participants as they crossed home plate. All eligible participants also received a special Run to Home Base t-shirt and basRide for our Heroseball hat. Runners were provided with water along the route and snacks following the race.

The Red Sox Foundation and Massachusetts General Hospital Home Base Program is an initiative supported by philanthropy that serves New England by identifying, motivating, and clinically treating service members, veterans and their families impacted by the invisible wounds of war. The Home Base Program serves the nation as a successful model for private-public collaborations; a source of new communication and education; and a leader in finding and implementing new treatments or post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and traumatic brain injury (TBI).
