Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Marcia L. Fudge (OH-11) today called upon the House Republican leadership to quickly bring up and approve the Senate’s Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act of 2013.  Earlier today, The Senate passed S. 47, a strong, bipartisan bill by a vote of 78 to 22. 

“The victims of domestic violence, dating violence, and sexual assault should not have to wait any longer for protection under the law,” said Congresswoman Fudge.  It has been 501 days since House Republicans allowed the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) to expire.  The House GOP Leadership failed to bring this measure to a vote despite the fact that the Senate passed a similarly strong, bipartisan bill in the previous Congress.  Now, in this new Congress, the Senate has once again acted and it is time for the House to do the same.  We must act without delay and reauthorize this legislation.  Since it was first enacted in 1994, VAWA has successfully reduced violence and given law enforcement and the courts the tools they need to prosecute offenders.”

The Senate bill significantly strengthens the ability of the Federal Government, the States, law enforcement, and service providers to combat domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking.  It also includes provisions to ensure that all victims of domestic violence receive the protection they need – extending protections for tribal members, immigrants and members of the LGBT community.

On January 22, 2013, Congresswoman Fudge co-sponsored H. R. 11, legislation introduced by Rep. Gwen Moore (D-WI), Rep. John Conyers (D-MI) and other House Democrats. H.R. 11 is identical to the language introduced in S. 47.
